June 20, 2018 - Dr. Mattias Gromeier - For Duke Magazine

Dr. Mattias Gromeier | Duke Magazine
Dr. Mattias Gromeier has been doing, and continues to do, incredible work at Duke in regards to research and implementation of a modified polio virus to treat brain tumors. Rather than try to explain it here, I’ll refer to Barry Yeoman’s story on Gromeier and where things are now.
I was asked to photograph Gromeier and the people he works closely with for this summer’s edition of Duke Magazine. Four years earlier, thanks to a connection from Shawn Rocco, I was asked to helped out portrait photographer Steve Pyke when he came to Duke to photograph Gromeier’s first patient, Stephanie Lipscomb, for People Magazine, so it was an fun coincidence and honor to be a part of this project.
Dr. Gromeier was a joy to photograph. He worked with us to make sure the shoot went smoothly and gave us a lot of time to make sure we had plenty of material. I couldn’t have asked for more!
Prior to this story in Duke Magazine Gromeier had appeared on 60 minutes and told great stories about that experience including the fact that former 60 minutes reporter Scott Palley was super sharp and knew the science behind Gromeier’s research back and forth. Not surprising, but also great to hear.
Thank you to art director and designer Lacey Chylack for the call!
